Straight beautiful teeth is everyones goal. Frequently, braces is all you need to achieve this goal. People ask me how old is “too old” to have braces. I had a seventy year old patient who wanted her teeth straight. She is now 80 and still looks like the “OIL OF OLAY” model. She has never regretted having her smile idealized. We offer “regular” braces and Dr Vaughn is certified for Invisalign if you don’t like the “look” of bands and brackets. There are 2 main reasons that you should let us evaluate you for braces. One is because we believe in looking at the hole face, not just straight teeth. There are many small “tweaks” that we can do to make your straight teeth look more like you want. A thorough discussion is the best start, with pictures and X-rays to make sure you see what we see. The second reason you should allow us to evaluate you or your child, is because we offer “interceptive” orthodontics. If you notice your child’s mouth not lining up correctly, or having a huge underbite or overbite; if your child’s chin does not seem to line up correctly, these are all symptoms of a problem that can only be fixed while your child is growing. I like to see a child no later than 6 years old if it looks like their skeleton is not growing correctly. Also we need to talk about airways and tonsils, adenoids and sleeping habits. Early intervention could save your child from a lifetime of a problems.
I enjoy talking to everyone about what we can do for you or your child and encourage you to make an appointment if you have any questions. I have been helping people with braces for over 20 years and have had wonderful results.
Orthodontics – Canton, MS
Orthodontics is a specialized field of dentistry that corrects jaw and teeth alignment. The most traditional correction is to apply metal braces, but advances in dentistry and orthodontics offers more corrective methods than ever before.
Starting proactive orthodontic treatment when children are seven years old can make the process much more comfortable for him or her. The best way to learn more about your child’s orthodontic needs is to take them for regular dental visits. At Dental Solutions of Mississippi, we will suggest a course of treatment that meets the special needs of your child.
Proactive treatment offers many benefits:
- The teeth are easier to move, as the bone is softer
- The need to remove teeth later is reduced
- Spaces for incoming teeth can be created to avoid excessive crowding
- Treatment time can be reduced
Regardless of the cause of teeth and jaw misalignments, the treatment process is similar. Your dentist will perform full x-rays of the head and mouth then take impressions of the teeth. Once a specialized treatment plan is determined, the braces will be applied and adjusted from time to time until the desired results have been reached. Adjustments often result in mild discomfort that subsides over time. After treatment is finished, a retainer will be used to keep the teeth in position.
Children between the ages of seven and 14 are ideal candidates for braces because their facial structures are still developing. Treatment time for braces is usually around two years, but adults are often required to wear their braces longer, as their facial structures are fully developed.
Caring For Your Braces
Braces require diligent dental care to ensure that food particles do not get trapped in the appliances. Brushing, flossing, and rinsing are necessary to prevent decay and staining that can occur on the enamel that is not covered by the braces.
Great care must be taken to avoid hard or sticky foods. These foods can not only damage the braces, they can cause decay, as well, as they can hide in the tiny spaces created by the network of brackets and wires.
