While we highly urge everyone to properly brush their teeth twice a day to prevent cavities, there are other preventative measures that can be taken to protect their teeth even further. At Dental Solutions of Mississippi, we recommend a bi-yearly visit to get a professional cleaning and help prevent many oral problems that may come. Preventative dentistry can save you money and time on significant and extensive restorative procedures in the future. If you are in the Canton, Mississippi area, come in for a visit!
At each bi-yearly visit to our office, you can expect a professional cleaning of your teeth. Each member of our dental team has been educated, trained, and practiced in the process of professionally cleaning teeth. Each visit to our office will be personalized and tailored to your needs and wants to ensure your comfort while receiving your cleaning.
At the beginning of your dental cleaning, you will have a dental exam. The exam is completely painless but is done to check for cavities, tooth decay, or any alignment issues. At least once a year, you can expect digital X-rays to be taken of your teeth. Once the hygienist knows that everything is in order, the professional cleaning will begin.
Each cleaning begins with the removal of plaque. Plaque can be hard to see but can build up in the corners of your teeth and create cavities. The hygienist will use a tool called a scaler to scrape away any plaque from all the corners of your teeth, especially from the back molars. Good oral hygiene needs to be practiced in order to limit plaque buildup.
After all the plaque is removed, tooth polishing using a high-powered brush will be done. The high-powered brush will deep clean the enamel of your teeth. This will not be a painful process but should feel as though someone else is brushing your teeth. Following the high-powered cleaning, you will receive a professional flossing. The hygienist will floss every individual tooth and can get to the back molars.
After the cleaning, some oral education will be given to you to help you know what you can do to improve your oral hygiene. Daily brushing and flossing are necessary, but so are things like not opening packaging with your teeth or changing some things that you consume.
