Our smiles are one of the first things someone will notice about us, so taking care of your smile with good oral hygiene, bi-yearly checkups, and other dental treatments should be a high priority. At Dental Solutions of Mississippi, we offer ways to take care of your teeth and prevent severe, tooth-damaging, dental emergencies from happening. For our patients who participate in athletics or physical activities, we recommend athletic mouth guards as a way to prevent chipped, broken, or knocked-out teeth. We invite you to continue reading to learn more about mouth guards and why they are so effective in protecting your smile.

What is an Athletic Mouth Guard?

A mouth guard is a strong dental appliance that is custom made out of thick dental plastic to fit over the top row of your teeth. Mouth guards are recommended for those who play athletic sports, but others can also benefit from them.  Mouth guards protect your teeth from all types of injury such as broken and chipped teeth, bitten tongue, or even tears in your gums and tissue that can occur.

How to Get One

Getting an athletic mouth guard is a fairly simple process. When you come into our office, we will take an impression of your teeth that will be made into a mold that will provide the details of your smile we need to make the guard. This will ensure that the mouth guard fits the size of your mouth perfectly. After the impression has been taken, it will take us a few weeks to create it and have it completely ready.

For each of our patients who currently have or are trying to get a mouth guard, we recommend that you replace it around every 4 months, or after a full sports season. The more you bite down into your mouth guard, the more loosely it will fit onto your teeth.

Benefits of Mouth Guards

  • Mouth guards protect your teeth from chipping, breaking, or biting down on your tongue, especially when you are participating in physical activities. Ultimately saving you money or restorative procedures that may have been needed without the mouth guard.

No matter the reason you try a mouth guard, the benefits will help your smile remain healthy over time. If you or a loved one is looking for a way to prevent any dental problems that may come from athletic issues, do not hesitate to reach out to us. Here at Dental Solutions of Mississippi in Canton, Mississippi, we want to help you avoid those extensive dental problems.
