The Wonderful World of Orthodontics

benefits of orthodontics

Information:

We weren’t all blessed with naturally straight teeth, so sometimes, orthodontics are necessary. When I recommend orthodontic treatment to a patient, I’m not just thinking about the straightness of their smile, I’m also thinking of all of the other benefits that can result from orthodontic treatment. As much as patients might consider orthodontics to be cosmetic, it can actually improve their quality of life. Here’s how:

The Many Benefits of Orthodontics

A straight smile is just the beginning of why orthodontics are such a valuable treatment. With properly aligned teeth, you can also experience:

  • Proper jaw alignment. Underbite, crossbite, overbite … all can lead to misaligned jaws, which can then lead to a number of unpleasant side effects, such as headaches, earaches, and sore or locked jaws. A properly aligned jaw reduces your chances of experiencing these aches and pains plus allows you to chew your food properly, which aids in digestion.
  • A reduced likelihood of periodontal issues. When teeth are crooked or crowded, they can be difficult to properly clean – even with dental floss. Food particles and other debris cause bacteria that leads to tooth decay, gum disease, and ultimately tooth loss. When your teeth are aligned, you are able to clean all of the necessary surfaces when you brush and floss.
  • An increase in confidence. Having missing or misaligned teeth can have a negative impact on your confidence. If you know anyone with these problems, you may have noticed that they cover their mouth when they speak, smile with a closed mouth, or hold back laughter – all because they are self-conscious about their teeth. Orthodontics allow you to share your smile with the world and feel confident about your looks.

If you’ve been putting off orthodontic treatment for yourself or for your child because you felt it was optional, there is no better time than now to reconsider treatment. No matter what your age, I can recommend an orthodontic option that will allow you to enjoy improved health and a beautiful smile. Contact my office to schedule a consultation.
