At Dental Solutions of Mississippi, we’re passionate about dental health – not just because we’re dental healthcare professionals, but because we understand the role that dental health plays in overall health. Recently, one of our favorite patients, Dewayne, experienced firsthand just how much dental health and whole health are related.
Diabetes and Periodontal Disease
Dewayne had been battling diabetes for years. He also had severe periodontal disease. The problem is that he was caught in a cycle created by the coexistence of both conditions: Diabetes leads to an increased occurrence and severity of periodontal disease while, at the same time, the inflammation that comes with periodontal disease negatively affects the body’s ability to control blood sugar. Something had to be done, not just to improve Dewayne’s smile, but his overall health, as well.
Dewayne’s Story
After tossing the idea around for about a year, Dewayne finally decided to commit to treatment. We used the Solea laser to remove excess gum tissue. With the Solea laser, Dewayne experienced less pain and bleeding than normal, allowing him to see the results almost instantly. Not only was he pleased with the aesthetic results of his treatment, he was hopeful that having healthier gums might make his diabetes easier to control.
The Moral of the Story
If Dewayne had not opted for treatment, he’d still be dealing with painful and swollen gums, misaligned teeth, and unstable sugar levels. While oral surgery is certainly something to give careful consideration to, ignoring poor dental health is detrimental to your wellbeing. There is no need to be fearful of judgement or feel embarrassed by your teeth; at Dental Solutions of Mississippi, we will find a solution that works for you.
